You may want to consider the 'sleeper' of the Altec multicells, the 203B. There is a pair for sale in the classified section.

The ones that belong to Audio by Goodwill? I thought he did not want to ship. Great price, tho. Never heard the 203, would be very interested to.

In a small rectangular room of average size (Most peoples Listening Room)the 203's aren't real good.They work well in long narrow rooms.They are designed for outdoor installations(Long Throw) for distance. IMHO

Panomaniac....I'm using APT200's....nothing too fancy, but they sound quite good to me.

This project is for an upgrade to my modded La Scala's.....for the mid range. This is their weakest link. If I can improve this then I believe it will improve everything else as well.

They just don't have that effortless mid sound that a big speaker needs.

None of the 300 hz multicells were designed or marketed for the size of rooms we have in our homes. We can disagree on personal preferences, but not that one horn is for long-throw and the others not.

Any of the 300 hz multicells will dwarf your LaScala bins.... The 311-60 is better suited size-wise to that cab, and does perform admirably well with the Altec phenolic midrange drivers. They will do your 400hz. with ease. Plus, they would be much simpler to ship to the "Land of Oz". Enjoy!

Audio is all about preferrences period, what sounds good to you may not sound good to me and Vice Versa.

I say the 94B's as the info sent by GM tells me that the dispersion of the other Mantaray horns seems to be very limited....wouldn't this give a beamy sound?

Kind of hard to recommend a specific horn when you don't define the app..........

Well, 'beamy' is relative in that if it fits the needs of the app it's just right, but in a typical HIFI app 60x60 works well as does 40-80 to 90. For longer listening distances then, narrower is better, ergo wider is better for sitting closer in smaller rooms or for many HT apps.

If you have basic woodworking skills you could build a pair of conical horns. A large pair of conicals sound very open and natural with the phenolic drivers.

Agreed, this will outperform all the others listed with the trade-off of being even larger.

Not sure what you are saying, but 10 cell muilticells are not long throw, and 203's are.

I've used 1003's in small clubs, only complaint was about the size. 203 would NOT have worked. At least not without multiples.

Are they all kinda big for the average living room? Yes but the issue is much more pronounced with 203's and the tight pattern.
